Maryland Blue Cross and Blue Shield report 1981 enrollments and benefit payouts rose. The organizations state subscribers received more than 544 million dollars in hospital and medical care benefits last year, up six million from 1980 and over 93 cents of every dollar paid by subscribers.
Enrollment for Blue Cross climbed to 1 063 000 and Blue Shield reached 667 000, as total benefits rose. Blue Cross payments totaled 35 376 000 with 108 000 inpatient and 20 000 maternity cases, while Blue Shield care benefits reached 9 336 000. Operating expenses stayed at a record low 4.3 percent of subscription income.
Blue Shield benefits rose by 19000 with covered services totaling 103000 surgical 28000 medical 14000 obstetrical and 72000 other types.
