Maryland Governor McKeldin granted a stay of execution for 47 year old John Wesley Elliott sentenced to die in the gas chamber at the Maryland Penitentiary. The reprieve followed hours after the warden set an execution time while investigations and studies were directed to run their course. Also reported, a Cumberland man, Alva O Butts, died by suicide after despondence over furlough, leaving a dozen remaining children.
