Bonus Backers Meet Setback
Annapolis March 174 Backers of a 100 million dollar World War II veterans bonus faced a setback as the Senate Finance Committee pigeonholed the bill by a 9-6 vote for an unfavorable report. Earlier moves to table were ruled out of order, with a coalition of supporters and opponents named. The bill proposes a 1950 referendum on bonuses from 10 to 500 dollars funded by a 2 percent sales tax, replacing earlier plans to raise bonds via higher property taxes. Similar measures await action in the House Ways and Means Committee.
