Federal encroachment in farming policy sparks state rights debate
Clark S. Hobbs reprints University of Maryland president Dr. H. C. Byrd’s critique of U S Department of Agriculture efforts to bypass state agencies. He notes AAA and related programs steer farmers directly, allying with county and state committees, risking loss of state control and curriculum authority in land grant colleges and extension services.

Must Produce Wood To Make Containers In Maryland
Farmers must supply lumber and pulpwood for containers used in harvesting and shipping crops, as urged by the War Food Administration. Due to labor shortages in woods, Maryland farmers and farm hands are asked to devote time before spring planting to cutting trees in their own or nearby woodlands, per extension forester Harry W. Dengler.

Farmers urged to cut weed trees to aid war effort
In Maryland a university extension official urges farmers to harvest underutilized woodlot trees while markets are favorable. Dengler says cutting inferior trees boosts wartime wood supply and lands extra profit, with guidance available through the University of Maryland Extension Service at College Park. Soybean support prices for 1944 were raised by the State Agricultural War Board, to 2.04 per bushel for green and yellow beans grade US No 2 or better, 1.84 for brown, black or mixed beans. 1943 prices were 1.80 and 1.60 respectively.
