Senators insist on Rhine payment for keeping troops in Germany
In Washington on March 18 Senate leaders Lodge Underwood and Borah urged the United States to enforce the Rhine payment of 241,000,000 for American soldiers in Germany. Underwood pressed for an American on the reparations commission while Borah attacked allied obstruction. Debate circled over whether the obligation rests on the armistice or the Versailles Berlin treaties as calls to bring troops home intensified.
