Irrigation changes minds and boosts profits in Missouri farm meet
A Missouri farmers meeting in Ticmond heard irrigation as a practical tool to stabilize yields and raise income. G G Wat of Mathieson described a soil moisture driven system. Dr. Arnold Klemm and Dr. Williams warned against weather based irrigation and highlighted benefits for crops, livestock, and farm stability. Proved by local growers Bennett and Graham, irrigation doubled corn yields and improved dairy efficiency on pasture land.

One Reason For An uneven Pea Growth
College Park advice from University of Maryland extension specialist Andrew A Duncan on uneven pea growth. He cites high drill speeds causing plants at varying depths and recommends reducing planting speed to 3 to 3.5 miles per hour, using thick seeding rates, preplant seed treatment with insecticide fungicide, and being ready to spray for aphids with malathion.

Farmers plan smaller crop plantings under soil bank proposal
Washington reports a Agriculture Department survey showing about 352 million acres likely to be planted to 59 principal crops this year, a cut under 1 percent from last year. The Benson administration seeks a 10 percent reduction via the soil bank in the omnibus farm bill, with more cuts possible if enacted before spring planting. The plan pays farmers to reduce planting to curb surpluses depressing farm prices.

Senate Adds 250 Million for Pork Purchase Fund in Farm Bill Split Vote
The Senate approved an extra 250 million dollars for pork purchase and delayed final action on its farm bill until next week. After a nine hour session, leaders considered keeping the chamber open all night to push the measure, with Eisenhower and others urging speed ahead of planting season. The move, tied to price supports for pork, beef, and perishables, could reshape farm subsidies and influence the fall farm vote. The panel also struck a controversial clause on foreign currency sales and rice price provisions, while further conference talks were anticipated.
