Charge Lewis Charged With Provoking Miner Walkout
Washington reports say John L Lewis deliberately provoked the coal mine walkout to push for 100 monthly pensions for miners. Ezra War Horn, spokesman for operators, warned of court action to appoint a neutral trustee for a 30 million dollar miner welfare fund and interpret the TaftHartley Act. More than 300,000 of Lewis’s 409,000 miners were idle as fuel stocks hovered at a dangerously low level. The White House offered no move to end the strike. May Day at Maryland set for May 11 with a May Queen chosen by junior women.
