Wage Garnishment Hits B and O Workers in Cumberland

The Cumberland Times reports last Saturday wages for railroaders and shop workers were garnished, reducing cash in circulation. Maryland has laws against wage attachments, but West Virginia does not, prompting local claim firms to route debts into state agencies and attachments through B and O. The piece notes many workers affected, with officials predicting long term effects on debt payment and frugal living as wages are diverted to creditors. It cites at least half of the B and CO roundhouse workforce with attachments and suggests broader lessons on debt collection and monetary discipline.
