Afghan War Major Operation Underway Ends in Heavy Fighting
Brigadier Col. Frank Wiercinski of the 101st Airborne led Operation Anaconda in the Shah i Kot range near Kandahar. An RPG struck a Black Hawk but did not explode, forcing a high ridge halt as Afghan and U.S. forces pressed to crush al Qaida and Taliban fighters, with hundreds claimed but initial Afghan counts listing 25 bodies. The offensive involved three battalions, Afghan fighters, and U.S. Air Force, targeting caves and slopes. The battle ended as Afghan forces closed strongpoints like The Whale and exits from the area, with lessons urged for future joint attacks.
