Admirers bid high for Fritchie memorabilia

Barbara Fritchie memorabilia fetched over ten thousand at a Satur day auction at the fairgrounds building. Richard Kline paid 6700 for a walnut barometer to return to the Fritchie house on Patrick Street. Katherine Howard paid 2200 for a sampler from the hero’s home. A pine cupboard sold for 5000 and grass envelopes brought 12.50. A Mrs Fritchie grave postcard sold for 60. The auction was led by Tim Gordon for Howard H. Kelly II, a Fritchie descendant.

White House counters Clinton accuser against account

White House officials questioned Kathleen Willey's credibility on morning talk shows and contrasted her TV statements with a 1996 meeting. President Clinton has sworn to his deposition denying Willey’s claim of sexual contact, while Willey said she described events before a Whitewater grand jury.

Fatal head-on crash on U S 15 near Mountville Road

Two drivers died in a Saturday head-on collision on U S 15 near Mountville Road. Paul Brandenburg 61 of Frederick and Jody Bodes 27 of Hagerstown were killed. Brandenburg’s truck burned. his wife Betty Jo 25 was critically injured and later listed as serious to critical. Police said Brandenburg crossed the center line. Bodes died instantly. Autopsy pending. Mary land State Police investigated the three hour highway closure.

Grandmother and toddler found dead in upscale home

In Rockville Maryland, Montgomery County Police investigate a drowning and suspected self harm in an affluent neighborhood. The incident follows the sudden March death of retired Gen Benjamin Baker, husband of the deceased. The two and the child, Trez Baker, aged two, were at Mary Jane Baker’s Aster Boulevard residence. Police described the scene as tragic and puzzling while autopsy results are awaited.

Woman killed in Darnestown crash

A woman died early Saturday in Montgomery County when a 1981 Mercedes eastbound at high speed left the road, veered down an embankment, struck a boulder and a tree. Police described the vehicle as out of control at the time of impact.
