Reagan shifts stance on taxes and military cuts
President Reagan after talks with Senate GOP leaders says higher taxes and reduced military spending are needed to curb the federal deficit. A $249.5 billion three year deficit reduction plan includes $48 billion in new revenues from closing tax loopholes and about $40 billion in defense cuts along with $43.2 billion in domestic spending cuts. The plan faces a challenging path in Congress as Democrats weigh support. The Senate Finance Committee moved toward a $100 billion deficit reduce plan, approving a liquor tax increase and blocking IRS guidance on taxing employer fringe benefits.
