Judge John S. Newman of Curcun Cov and Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson survived a Saturday crash east of Funkstown when their car veered off the highway struck a phone pole. Newman unhurt. Thompson sustained a minor forehead brace from the sun visor. The vehicle was badly damaged but the judge avoided harm by steering down a slope. Scene one mile west of Benevola.
The Court Street widening project for the court house block finished today after weather delayed final tar and stone work. A new sewer manhole and curb and gutter were completed as part of the city WPA job begun January 17 for a three day project.
A 31 year old man from Lancashire was jailed in Manchester on charges of attempting to extort 1000 from Princess Barbara Hutton by threatening to reveal a plot to kidnap her newborn son. Police stopped the scheme when he arranged a rendezvous with a supposed messenger. he admitted no plot existed and is held in custody for a week.
The Maryland State Department announces a plan to distribute 40 000 trout including brown brook and rainbow varieties. The fish are raised at hatcheries with consignments allocated to Frederick Baltimore and Washington counties. The Maryland fishing season opens April 1.
