New Design road project put to bid and planned start
The New Design Road reconstruction from Elmer Derr to Foxcroft Drive includes 3.2 miles of four lane roadway and a new triple span bridge over Ballenger Creek. The project budget is 9.7 million with 6.4 million county funded and two alternatives to control costs amid higher utility relocation costs. Construction could take up to two years, starting mid June, with possible road closures and uncertain sequencing of road and bridge work. The plan foresees 4,000 housing units across seven residential developments plus schools, shopping centers, parks, a fire station and a library site.

Maryland video tax bill clears state Senate
The Maryland Senate approved a bill allowing towns to levy up to a 5 percent tax on video and game cartridge rentals by a 27 to 19 vote. Support comes from groups like the Maryland Municipal League, while critics call it a tax burden on residents. The measure now goes to the House of Delegates as Mount Airy weighs potential local adoption if enacted.
