Frederick city will not hold a primary this year as Democratic and Republican chairmen James McSherry and E. Robert Bowlus, meeting with Mayor E. Paul Magaha, say conventions avoid city costs. They note a future primary could be needed if the city grows, but currently favor the convention system.
Bids for a new United Fire Company hall addition on South Market Street are due April 5 at 7 p.m. City engineer Robert J. Rothenhoefer notes the project will use $125,000 from a $1.5 million bond issue. The brick fronted structure will measure about 34 by 17 by 112 feet, with two levels at the rear and a 65-foot apparatus storage area. The design credit goes to Frederick architect Charles F. Bowers.
A Frederick man linked his quarrel and drunkenness to a bad cold. Magistrate Stanley Y. Bennett placed a suspended $25 fine on both charges after testimony from Donald R. Bartgis that the man argued with a State Police Barrack clerk and used threats. He blamed the trouble on a cold and the risk of pneumonia.
New York traders faced a continued market downturn with scattered signs of support. Activity remained moderately brisk as prices edged lower across major sectors in early trading.
Frederick City plans to announce its next move over the Walkersville sanitary district after county approval of the district. Aldermen asked the city attorney to prepare a court injunction against the district to halt work on the Glade Creek sewage plant.
The House of Delegates passed a bill calling for 2.2 million more in state and local contributions to public libraries. If Governor Tawes signs, Frederick County would gain 16 288 in state aid only after local sources add 25 256. Counties have two years to decide acceptance while six counties and Baltimore City already meet the requirement.
The GOP Club hosts its annual spring dinner at Peter Pan Inn on March 26 at 7 p.m. Republican candidates and prospects are expected to attend as party officials announce plans for city county and state elections.
President Johnson signed a 4.8 billion dollar bill to support the Viet Nam war and urged Peking and Hanoi to abandon conquest. He framed Congress passage as a message of American resolve to stand behind fighting men in Viet Nam. State Secretary Rusk said many non Communist governments back U S policy and predicted more aid to South Viet Nam.
Voters in Brunswick's third ward go to the polls to choose a new councilman to fill the post left by Jess B. Orndorff's mayoral win. Four candidates include two railroad employees, fireman Raleigh Boaze and conductor James W. Hill, plus Donald W. Dawson of Shelly's Dry Cleaning and William L. Haller a government employee. Polls opened at 7 am at the fire hall and will close at 7 pm with a strong turnout expected from nearly 800 voters.

Harry A. Harper will resign as executive director of the Frederick County United Appeal on April 1 to become executive director of Peoria’s United Health Foundation and associate director of the Heart of Illinois United Fund campaign. He will lead a staff of 18 and earn a substantially higher salary, which United Appeal officials did not disclose. Harper has led the Frederick County United Appeal for four years.
The peak in Antarctica is named for Chief Petty Officer Julian P. Gudmundson, a career Navy man stationed near Thurmont. He recalls brutal cold, five months of darkness, and the Aurora Australis as he led Seabees support for IGY projects. He weathered -127 degrees at the pole and recalls lonely winters with limited radio contact to his family.
In Jakarta a massive rally organized by Pancha sila Front drew over a million supporters for Lt. Gen. Suharto as he campaigns against Communists. Speakers called for cleansing the Cabinet and putting Communists on trial while the U S ambassador described the demonstration as among the largest he had seen.
A Frederick man convicted of being drunk in Mag testified he would like a suspended sentence. Magistrate Stanley Y. Bennett imposed a $25 suspended fine after Officer Gary Heerd testified the man was staggering and bumping into trees on South Market Street when picked up in March.
