Ethiopia Urged to Host U S Red Sea Base
Addis Ababa reports say the United States pressed Ethiopia for a Red Sea base near Massawa to support Navy and Air Force operations in the Middle East. Nixon and Selassie spoke with reporters about security and U S activity while Egypt weighed blocking Israeli ships from the Gulf of Aqaba. Ethiopian leaders emphasized equal footing in any collaboration and stressed reopening the Suez Canal as vital to commerce.
