Fate Of State Hatcheries Is In Doubt

Baltimore March 12 Present plans and future expansion of the State fish hatcheries are handicapped by lack of funds. War conditions cut funds from 33 000 in 1941 to 16 000 in 1942. The commission hopes to raise license fees, but the bill retains 1.25. Costs for food, labor and transport have risen. One year old trout cost 35 to 40 cents, two-year-olds 50 to 85 cents. Hatcheries stock about 80 000 trout and 200 000 bass each year.

Pasture Seed Substitution Improves Timothy Yields

Timothy and Ladino clover can improve long term forage when clover replaces red clover seed in pasture reseedings. After year one Ladino’s perennial creeping growth helps timothy maintain cover and boosts soil nitrogen. Proper grazing timing from 8 to 15 inches, with 4 inch stubble, and bloat precautions are essential for stand longevity.
