Depressive realism may shield against low mood study finds
Northwestern University psychologist Tauren Alloy reports that people with low spirits show more accurate views of their control and life events, while optimistic individuals often blame luck for failures. Over 1985 data, the researchers note preliminary findings that optimistic bias might protect against mood decline, warranting further study.

Implanted defibrillators may curb cardiac arrest deaths
SEW ORLEANS AP reports permanently implanted defibrillators restore heart rhythm and dramatically cut death rates in high risk patients. In followup studies led by Drs. Winkle and Veltri, firstyear death rate fell to 1.2 percent and fiveyear rate to 6.2 percent among treated patients, with many shocks improving survival despite some discomfort.

Cholesterol levels fall since 1960, survey says
A federal survey shows American adults in 1980 had notably lower blood cholesterol than in the early 1960s, with declines up to four percent across multiple groups. White men and women logged about three to four percent drops, black groups modestly lower, and overall high heart disease risk reduced from 18.1 percent of men and 22.2 percent of women in 1968 to about 15.5 percent and 17.8 percent in 1980. The study notes diet changes and more exercise as possible factors while noting the phase will resume next year for updated data.
