FSK student to deliver research analysis at Maryland symposium
William Smith, senior at Francis Scott Key High School, is one of six Maryland students slated to present analysis of his ultraviolet light study on the slime mold Physarum polycephalum at the Maryland Academy of Science Symposium on Science and Humanities in Baltimore March 18 and 19. He will also represent Maryland at the National Science Search Symposium in Washington March 22, with a US-international meeting in London this summer possible. Smith’s work, aided by a polarOID microscope, shows ultraviolet overexposure alters slime mold form and reproduction, highlighting sunburn and skin cancer risks in humans if ozone depletes. Roger Steele praises his curiosity and two prior independent science projects. Smith also runs cross country, and serves as vice president of the science club at Scott Key.
