An Interesting Family From North Carolina
A travelogue of a western North Carolina family near Hot Springs describes a 28-member household living in a one-room log cabin. The twenty children are noted as exceptionally handsome, blond, and untutored, with two older daughters married and living at home. Income is meager, as the father walks seven miles daily to Hot Springs. The piece contrasts beauty with poverty and implies a portrait of rural life.

Odd Health Misadventures and Domestic Snippets
A collage of brief items recounts a surgeon's tale of pain after an arm amputation, a witty dialogue about a padded coat and gambling debts, and observations on washing in Japan, wood pulp science, and authorship humor. Short notes touch on fish killing methods, a fake medical cure trial, population estimates to 1890, and an advertised English remedy claiming to cure lung troubles and dyspepsia.
Fragmented text reveals racial stereotypes and medicinal ads
A garbled page segment mixes outdated racialized musically themed commentary with drug advertisements. It cites instruments linked to African origins and includes an interview excerpt, then pivots to health ads for Hood's Sarsaparilla Kemp's influenza remedy and Dr. Bell's products, concluding with druggist endorsements.
