House panel backs rise in federal minimum wage

The House Education and Labor Committee tentatively approved a raise from 3.85 to 5.05 an hour, with a 40 cent fourth year addition proposed by Rep. Perkins. The panel split largely along party lines, while Democrats Murphy and Penny opposed the plan. A companion Senate bill seeks a 4.65 wage over three years. The panel also voted to raise the tip credit for restaurant workers, though concerns about job losses were raised.

Eastern Air Lines held in contempt over shuttle sale plan

U S District Judge John H Pratt found Eastern Air Lines Inc in contempt for moving to sell its shuttle to parent Texas Air Corp for 225 million dollars in defiance of a July 2 1987 injunction. The ruling follows Eastern’s plan to spin off the Air Shuttle and transfer ground crews. A March 18 hearing will decide sanctions. The IAM AWF union says the court sent a message that Texas Air must comply with the Railway Labor Act. An Eastern spokesman promises an expedited appeal. FAA approval for the sale is pending and not expected for at least a month.

Correction on radon readings in Thursday's business section

The article clarifies outdoor radon concentration should read 2 PicoCuries per litre, not 2 PicoCuries. It also notes state radon test reports may be skewed because participants report only high and mid level readings, omitting low level logs.
