Matisse Rare Work Revealed In National Gallery Exhibition
A long presumed lost Matisse portrait, La toque de velours bleu showing Marguerite, has been rediscovered and added to the National Gallery of Art show Henri Matisse The Early Years in Nice 1916 1930. The painting, once owned by the Goodman family, was shown in Basel in 1931 before disappearing until its 1986 donation to the Norton Gallery of Art. The exhibit now features this and two other Norton works as the first dedicated survey of Matisse’s early southern France period with nearly one third of works seldom seen before.
