Haig Brothers Live Double Life as Soldier and Statesman
The piece profiles Jesuit Fr Frank Haig SJ of LeMoyne College in Syracuse about his elder brother Alexander M Haig Jr, US secretary of state, contrasting their paths from small town siblings to national prominence. It notes Fr Haig’s media weariness, family remarks on Al Haig’s pragmatism, and hints at a long history of service and leadership across Korea, Vietnam, and the Reagan era, with memories of their boyhood and a Generals visit.

Haig brothers theme runs from West Point to global diplomacy
The Haig family story traces two brothers, Hap and Al, from school doubts about military futures to West Point in 1947 and Al Haig rising to general in 1973. Their paths diverge with careers in priesthood and diplomacy, underscored by a Catholic upbringing, moves between Baltimore and Washington, and casual talks about world politics during family visits, including a Fourth of July call.
