Maryland fertilizer use falls as production climbs in 1979

Maryland fertilizer usage eased in 1979 while crop output rose. The Clarke office reported a 28 000 ton drop from 1978 in total fertilizer sales to 490 430 tons, with mixed fertilizers remaining dominant at 296 802 tons and 10-10-10 the leading blend at 49 055 tons. Queen Anne's led counties with 34 306 tons, Kent 37 078, Carroll 35 628, and Frederick 28 408. Agricultural observers link the trend to better soil testing and precise application amid rising fertilizer prices. The Clarke office, dating to 1833, also tests and registers fertilizers sold in Maryland.
