County agents report no dairy cattle sold for slaughter though livestock sales rise. Prices drive sales as elderly farmers retire. dairy production expected to stay steady as animals join new herds. OPA clamps down on combination sales of farm equipment to fix price ceilings and requires separate sales of controlled items.
A Chinese Army spokesman said Japan is building air bases on Kwangchowan off the coast between Hongkong and Hainan for operations against Taiwan. The 925 square mile island group has land and seaplane bases developed by the French who leased the territory from China in 180% and is used for bombardment of Dawon.
United States heavy bombers dropped a 12 ton load on the Parudaung bridge north of Rangoon in Burma yesterday and scored five direct hits on the north end. All American fliers returned safely according to a communique from American headquarters.
Sumner Welles said Ambassador Standley spoke in his personal capacity to Moscow correspondents about Soviet ignorance of American aid to Russia. Welles stated the remarks were without prior consultation with the US government and that Standley’s text aligned with Moscow press reports. He offered no further comment on recall prospects.
U S Navy reports a mixed air clash over the Solomons with American fighters and bombers intercepting a ten dive bomber and twelve fighter raid. Associate Judge Patrick M. Schnauffer imposed a two year term in the House of Correction on James E. Haines after a psychiatrist testified the youth had no unusual mental condition. Haines, accused of attacking a Frederick professional woman, showed no defense testimony. Edward D. Storm led the defense and Edwin F. Nikirk prosecuted.

A man identifying as William Ernest Fry, colored and from Washington, presented Selective Service papers at Police Headquarters and sought the local draft board address. Sergeant Heffner checked the papers and learned Fry must report for induction on March 4 at a capital draft board. Fry remained jailed as FBI agents were awaited on a draft charge.

Alexandria Virginia March 11 The American Red Cross reports Maryland chapters led the eastern area in the drive for a 12500000 war fund with seven of twenty three chapters reporting 39 percent of the Maryland goal 1901000. Baltimore chapter accounted for the major portion of the reported collections with Obo second at 28.5 percent.
John A. Saxten Jr returning from the New Hebrides by plane Sunday evening. He is promoted from Captain to Major in the United States Marine Corps and reports to Warrington D C. He studied at the Naval Academy Annapolis class of 1938 and entered the Marine School after graduation. He has a strong service record and recently spent thirty days on leave and will report to a training school in Orlando. His wife and infant daughter stay with her parents near Annapolis. His mother has returned from Annapolis.
Allied dispatches report from March 11 that Axis detachments attacked Sedjenane sector near Tamera and Sedjenane, but Allied forces repulsed the assault with heavy losses. Metlaoui center captured in central Tunisia. airfields at El Aouina Marsa and surroundings bombed with several Axis aircraft downed. Metlaoul claimed by Fighting French. weather hampering large operations. Rommel harassed in Mareth Line. British First Army patrolling Sedjenane area.
Hope rose in packing circles that hog price ceilings would spur farmers to market more hogs to capitalize on current prices above government ceiling levels. Washington reports floated a $14.50 to $15.00 per hundredweight ceiling with an order due soon. Hog prices in Chicago hovered around $15.40, with early week peaks near $16 the highest since October 1920.
Ceiling prices set by the Office of Price Administration apply to Grade A large eggs packed as one dozen. Independent retailers under 50 000 annual sales pay 53 cents per dozen, 50 000 to 250 000 pay 31 cents, and stores over 250 000 pay 50 cents. Extra large Grade A eggs average four cents higher per dozen.
Price Administrator Prentiss Brown announced a one pound coffee ration per person for five weeks starting March 22. The current ration is one pound for six weeks, with the next sale stamp N 76 in the ration book BU A. The policy cites improved import conditions and will run from March 22 to April 23.
Annapolis March 1 There is tense action as the Maryland Court of Appeals size reducing bill SB24 moves through the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Governor O Connor backs the measure while opponents warn of a failure to secure a three-fifths and constitutional amendment votes.
Three telephone threats were received by Assistant U S Attorney Edward Kallick as he prosecutes Philip Mancuso 25 father of seven month old twins charged with delinquency for failing to report to the draft. Kallick said the calls were made at 10 am 1 pm and 4 pm yesterday by men who cursed him over the case. Federal Judge Welsh urged a full fair hearing from the draft board which declined to rescind its induction order. Mancuso remained delinquent after missing induction and Kallick planned an appeal to the U S Circuit Court.
Lieut General George C Keaney commander of the Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific arrives in Washington at the head of a seven officer mission under Gen Douglas MacArthur. The party flew from New Guinea to report on war operations including the Bismarck Sea convoy action.
Soviet forces push west from Vyazma and seize Isakova as Red Army reports near closures around the German stronghold. Izvestia says Marshal Timoshenko’s units advance toward Staraya Rusnya while Berlin claims fighting near Kharkov remains active with Soviet regiments said destroyed.
The War Labor Board stated overtime pay rules are not altered by the 48 hour wartime week order. Employers may pay overtime after four hours if aligned with the Wage Hour Act or similar laws, a collective bargaining agreement, past practice, or local policy. Without such basis, overtime beyond straight time requires board approval.
A three alarm blaze destroyed the Swit & Co packing plant in Cumberland early today. Losses include meat lard and merchandise valued at about 56 dollars. Employee Wilbur Troutman on the second floor found smoke at about 1 a m. A loading platform beside the building was also destroyed. Cause believed to be basement furnace heat.
March 11 Pring Administrator Prentiss Brew said he would not relocate OPA enforcement except in rare cases. Brown reported that racketeers posing as OPA officials attempted to seize canned foods by intimidating households in several cities. One city allegedly had a stock where an OPA man entered without permission to check wares.
