Bill to strip legislators scholarships advanced in Annapolis
A Maryland House of Delegates committee advanced a bill to remove lawmakers’ power to award over 7 million dollars annually in scholarships to children of constituents. The measure, backed by House leaders including Speaker R. Clayton Mitchell Jr., moves toward a final vote, while Senate opposition remains likely as members control about 5.8 million dollars in annual awards. The bill would keep funds in the budget but administer them through the state scholarship board.
