U S Merchant Fleet Claims Global Lead In War Supply
Rear Admiral Emory S Land told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the United States Merchant Marine is larger than all other nations combined and must be preserved after the war. He argued for an extension of Lend Lease, noting the U S cargo fleet bears most war shipping responsibilities and 42 percent of outbound dry cargo last year was lend lease material. Reverse lend-lease from allies is rising, with India and others supplying the program at about two billion a year. Land described the U S fleet as a prize fighter kept in condition to deter future conflict.
