Military academies seek more and better candidates
The United States service academies report rising applications for the classes of 1987 and 1984, with West Point receiving over 14,000 applicants for about 1,400 spots, and high percentages of applicants from top high school ranks. Officials cite patriotism, post Vietnam views, free tuition and guaranteed careers as drivers, along with competition from MIT, RPI and Ivy League schools.
