Two Montgomery men receive three year terms for tavern robbery
Two Montgomery county Negroes, Harry Riggs and Cornelius Sims, were sentenced to three years in the House of Correction by Associate Judge Patrick M. Schnauffer after the court rejected their alibi. They were linked to breaking into Roger Smith's All Saints Street tavern on November 26 and stealing about $35 to $50 in coins. Dozens testified that the pair admitted the theft the next day while at the Smutesda ment, and indicated they had funds to repay. The men claimed they were in Frederick that night, borrowing $1.43 for gas to return home near Rockville. Authorities said they later showed money and bought wine and clothing. One witness was Sims' half-sister. Both had prior larceny and robbery records. Citton Wirts represented them, with Charles A. Price prosecuting.
