DOE to back Memphis coal gasification plant plans
The Department of Energy will participate with Memphis in a major coal gasification demonstration worth about 700 million dollars. DOE paid 11 million for Memphis preliminary design and will decide cost sharing for detailed design construction and operation. A site near President's Island is being reviewed for floodplain and environmental impacts before 1984 operation if approved. Grace Co plans a separate full size coal to gasoline plant in Baskett Kentucky with 3 billion dollar cost and 12 to 16 million in federal funds for 18 months to develop a conceptual design. The combined approaches aim to use coal gas to replace natural gas or imported oil for industry.
