Elephant Man at Kennedy Center opens with John Merrick
Bernard Pomerance's play portrays John Merrick as a society mirror. Dr Treves and Mrs Kendal guide his London hospital years 1836 to 1890, revealing stark contrasts between fear and compassion as Merrick endures deformity and seeks dignity. Jeffrey Anglim stars as Merrick in this staged, somber examination.
