Ten candidates enter the Sixth District race including six Democrats and Republican hopefuls from Frederick County. Incumbent Byron leads a field that includes Cumberland Mayor Conlon and state delegate Hugh Burger for the Democratic side and Mason Yingling as major Republican contenders. Two Shot In Seaplane Hijacking Near Miami

Gunmen hijack a Chalk’s International seaplane at Watson Island forcing the pilot and crew to fly toward Cuba. Pilot James Cothren and engineer Douglas Mackenzie were wounded. co-pilot, passengers, and the hijackers fled to safety as police exchanged shots. FAA says the plane headed south toward Cuba with 160 gallons of fuel.

Runaway Charged With Bomb Threat at Local High School

A 14 year old boy was charged by City Police with making a false bomb threat at Governor Thomas Johnson High School last Wednesday. He was arrested three days after the school received a ten minute warning and evacuation was ordered. No bomb was found and students returned to class. The youth is also charged as a runaway and is being held at Frederick County Jail. Maryland law imposes up to one year in prison and a $1000 fine for false bomb reports.

Merchants Elect Officers for New Year and Review Safety Plan

The Downtown Merchants Association held a monthly meeting to discuss a proposed merchant safety system in cooperation with the police department and to report on the Frederick Development Plan.
