In Holyhead waters the American steamer Waesland and the Harmonides met in thick fog. The Waesland sank after a midship collision. two lives were lost. Passengers and crew were rescued by the Harmonides and taken to Liverpool.

An explosion in the Catsburg mine of the Monongahela Coal and Coke Company yesterday killed five men and seriously injured several others after gas ignited when air was turned on. Rescue efforts faced later explosions as teams failed to reach trapped workers. Names of the dead include Mine Boss Robert Howey and James Howey, Isaac Eastwood, John Gilder, and William McFarland. among the seriously injured are James Haggar and James Torrent.
