Three sixth graders charged in brutal schoolyard assault
A 14 year old boy walking to his bus stop was attacked by three sixth graders with a baseball bat and a 2 by 4. The incident occurred at 11 20 a m near New Market West housing and New Market Elementary. The three 12 year olds face first degree assault charges. one also charged with carrying a concealed dangerous weapon after a hunting knife was found. Witnesses, including older brothers, say the attack was unprovoked and the youths showed no remorse.

Freder ick County Maryland reports that Heather Ridge School’s Twilight Program for students over 16, with day jobs and 3 to 6 pm classes, improved climate and transitions home. Attendance rose, dropouts fell, suspensions dropped, and disciplinary referrals dropped from 4462 to 1348 over two years. Forty five students mainstreamed in 1995-96 and 61 in 1996-97.

Five killed in Connecticut lottery headquarters shooting
A disgruntled employee opened fire at the Connecticut Lottery headquarters in Newington, killing four workers inside the building and a fifth in the parking lot before fatally shooting himself.
