Rights activist Skuodis branded criminal in Soviet Lithuania

Vytautas Skuodis of Lithuania is a seven year prison camp convict with a five year banishment for anti state agitation according to Soviet officials while the U S calls him Benedict Scott a 52 year old Chicagoan and the sole American inmate in Mordovia prisons. His wife Irina contends his crime was speaking for human rights and that he had worked for the government as a geologist. U S Embassy access has been denied and Lithuania rejects Washington’s citizenship claim noting dual citizenship is not recognized. Skuodis was born in Chicago in 1929 and raised in Lithuania where he worked as a geologist before arrest. He was imprisoned alongside two other activists in 1980 for publishing human rights chronicles and for a study titled Spiritual Genocide in Lithuania. The case mirrors others where Americans allegedly treated as Soviet citizens are denied exit permits.
