President Wilson, on his 61st day in office, announced he will not meet applicants for jobs in person unless invited. He aims to focus on government business and policy, directing appointments through department heads. First visitors included New Jersey politicians and new cabinet members such as Daniels, Lane, Bryan, and McAdoo, with a cordial, informal start to the administration.

Levi P Morton noted as former vice president and New York governor reported at his Fifth Avenue home.
Democratic caucus in Washington selects Champ Clark for speaker again with strong backing. Mitchell of Pennsylvania elected caucus chairman, Ashbrook of Ohio named secretary, and rules set to require fifty signatures for caucus motions. Underwood of Alabama chosen as Ways and Means chairman, preserving leadership slate.
Washington reports a strenuous police search for Neemie, the Italian poodle of Miss Helen Taft, who strayed from the White House as the Taft family left for Georgia. Neemie, a favorite of Nisa Taft, caused tears at Union Station as farewell crowds gathered.
