Shooting over dollar bet ends in ten year sentence
In Brunswick a 44 year old barber, Leslie Mathias Matthews, was sentenced to ten years in the Maryland Penitentiary for assault with intent to kill after a dispute over a one dollar pool bet. The victim, Ambrose Morris, testified from a hospital bed that Matthews shot him outside Cooper's tavern. Matthews claimed the shooting was provoked and turned himself in, noting he did not intend to kill Morris. The judge described the prelude as a minor tassel and found no justification for the shooting.

Rescue teams reached a charred chartered British airliner in a swamp near Douala Cameroon and found all 101 passengers and 10 crew dead.
