Solons Seek Maryland Racing Consolidation Amid War
Maryland lawmakers weigh a bill to consolidate major racing at a single track for wartime. The Senate proposal, unlike House bills, would not require prior approval from racing associations and would grant the Maryland Racing Commission discretion to permit up to 40 racing days per track per year during the war and six months after. The bill allows refunds of license fees if meets are impracticable, and could extend Pimlico's spring 15 days to be followed by fall sessions at Pimlico and Laurel Park, with Bowie and Havre de Grace not operating this year due to the pleasure driving ban.
