Officials to tour Thurmont schools
Frederick County Board of Education members will tour Thurmont Elementary to inspect facilities as part of a drive to address crowding. Governor Glendening will also visit to assess the need for new construction, following a campaign by Thurmont Citizens for Education opposing the busing plan. The district faces 27 percent enrollment above capacity with nine portables and a proposal to move about 100 students to neighboring schools with available seats.

Titanic rivets' brittleness eyed by NIST metallurgist
Timothy J. Foecke of Damascus, a National Institute of Standards and Technology metallurgist, has found that Titanic rivets from 1910 contained three times the slag allowed today, suggesting brittleness may have contributed to rivet failure during the 1912 sinking. He awaits an August expedition to recover more hull pieces and rivets to test his theory further.
