National Anthem Bill Passes House and Senate in 1930
The Star Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key with music by John Stafford Smith, was designated the national anthem after a long 1930-1931 Congress debate. By 50 years later John Kiley, Boston organist, had played it at least two hundred thousand times, a record noted at a Key Memorial anniversary in Frederick Maryland.

Labor leaders endorse Hoyer in fifth district race
Labor leaders from the Washington and Baltimore area endorsed former Maryland Senate President Steny Hoyer for the fifth congressional district seat. The private decision, supported by AFL-CIO affiliates and area unions, defeats state senator Edward Conroy and excludes Reuben Spellman and several GOP hopefuls. Union volunteers and donations are expected to aid the campaign. Hoyer called the endorsement a tremendous boost.
