Charlie Chaplin's Grave Stolen in Swiss Village

GE bacteria patented in major ruling on life forms
General Electric won a patent ruling allowing a manmade oil-eating bacterium to be patented. The Court of Customs and Patent Appeals backed GE in a 3-2 decision, saying live microorganisms can be patented as a manufactured invention. Ananda M. Chakrabarty created the strain by combining genetic material from different bacteria.

Nicaraguan slum town becomes symbol in fight against Somoza
In Manimbo 21 miles southeast of Managua the poor resist dictator Anastasio Somoza. Over three weeks at least 45 people died and more than 100 were injured as national guardsmen clashed with residents firing tear gas, bullets, and firebombs. Monimbo uprising began February 10 after a memorial mass for Pedro Joaquin Chamorro. Red Cross described many injured and burned, while troops used helicopters and machine guns to combat the resistance.
