Lawrences Budget Proposal Tops Pennsylvania 1959 61 Plan
Governor David L. Lawrence unveiled a 1.907 billion dollar two year budget for 1959 61 and called for about 400 million dollars in new taxes to balance the plan. He warned the General Assembly reductions would cut key public services and urged quick approval of the fiscal program and tax measures including a raised sales tax and higher cigarette taxes. The plan would push the total budget near 2.0 billion dollars for the two year period starting June 1.
