US Destroyer Jacob Jones Sunk by U Boat Off Cape May
The Navy announced the destroyer Jacob Jones was sunk by an enemy submarine off Cape May New Jersey before dawn on February 28 with 11 survivors. The loss included Lieutenant Commander H D Black and more than 100 officers and men, as the ship’s two torpedoes exploded the bow and stern and depth charges. The Jacob Jones, launched in 1918, was a World War I era 1200 ton destroyer with four inch guns and 12 torpedo tubes, named for a War of 1812 hero.
