Seminole's Severe Trip Brings Frostbitten Crew to Gloucester
The revenue cutter Seminole returned to Gloucester on February 28 after a record harsh voyage from February 4. Officers suffered frostbite, provisions tainted by salt water, and plates bent from ice, with prior rescue efforts failing to free the Gloucester fishing fleet stalled in ice near the Bay of Islands New York. Captain Rogers calls it the harshest voyage yet, noting 50-year worst winter conditions around Newfoundland. President Roosevelt on Wednesday signed a bill to erect a statue in Washington for Count Pulaski and Major General von Steuben of the Continental Army.
