Charles H. Smith was arrested after defrauding residents of multiple counties of about 20000 dollars. He claimed divine ordination to form a new religion the Star of Heaven and issued charters for six members who paid 25 dollars each. Lodges mortgaged farms then bought town lots sold by the financial agent, producing notes of 100 to 800 dollars. Hundreds fell victim.
