13 Fail To Win Hearing On Matusow Perjury Plea
Washington reports that 13 convicted Lomitunist party leaders failed again to secure Supreme Court review of their Smith Act convictions from January 1953. Defense attorneys pressed legal points as Matusow admitted sworn statements alleging false testimony, while Senate Internal Security subcommittee continues scrutiny of his conflicting accounts. The government contends perjury undermines justice and questions the use of government informers in Communist cases.

Fined For Not Sending Son To School
A Thurmont area man, James Nelson Staub of East Main Street, was fined $5 after being found guilty of failing to send his 13 year old son to school. Magistrate Edgar B. Palmer heard that the mother’s illness did not excuse the absences and the boy attended school only 10 days this year. The visiting teacher noted the child’s poor attendance, with 6342 days present and 1171 absent in a prior period. A doctor's certificate was shown but did not justify keeping the boy from school.
