Calls For Cut In State Budget In Maryland Legislature
Annapolis February 29 legislative leaders urged a cut of about two million dollars from Gov McKeldin 177 million budget. Senate Finance Committee trimmed 425 000 from approved appropriations and seeks a further 1 53 million in reductions. About 40 million cannot be cut including some school and judiciary outlays. Notable cuts include 100 000 from Health Department medical services for the poor and 100 000 from Welfare Department public assistance. Leaders Goldstein and Boone announced the plan awaiting Senate approval. House action could restore any cuts. The session must finish by Thursday. A separate bill funded a state pay raise, Senate endorsing 400 and House proposing 300 triggering a later settlement. Cross party lines supported retaining the property tax to back state bonds. A one-year moratorium on private oyster ground leasing cleared the House 86-17 and moved to Senate. A Chesapeake Bay committee backed a related measure despite objections.
