Admiralty Landing Tightens Encirclement Of 50,000 Japs
Allied forces under General MacArthur land on Los Negros Island near Manus in the Admiralty Islands operation. The 235 mile push tightens the encirclement of about 50,000 Japanese troops, severs supply lines, and establishes Momote airstrip. The strike, aided by Seventh Fleet bombardment, leaves Japanese air power diminished and positions increasingly precarious in Rabaul and New Britain.
