Washington Talks Yield No Clear Alliance Plan
James Marlow reports on the Washington conference with President Eisenhower, Prime Minister Churchill, Dulles, and Eden. The four leaders offered a vague joint statement emphasizing collective defense plans without defining structure, membership, or timing. Britain indicated willingness to consider an alliance only if it could secure a truce in Indochina, tying any defense pact to Geneva talks. The piece notes Communist risk in delay and questions the immediacy of any pact before Geneva.
