Slot Machines Authorized by Calvert Voters in Referendum
Calvert County voters authorized licensing of slot machines in a referendum, 1 724 for and 986 against. A special General Assembly bill pushed by Senator Louis L. Goldstein makes the licensing effective immediately, with fees of 100 dollars per year for the first four machines and 150 dollars for each additional machine, up to 1 000 dollars. Proceeds funnel to election costs first, then a county hospital fund, with the remainder to the general fund. A civic group argued the tax rate is too high, and the hospital could not be funded by bonds, while opponents noted most play occurs among Washington residents.
