Mayor Jim Grimes denied impropriety after the Board of Aldermen awarded a 109852 dollar bid to Grimes Truck Center for two city dump trucks used by Parks and Streets. Six vendors were invited. only one bid arrived.
An early morning bomb threat at the American military housing complex in Dhahran, once struck by a deadly truck bomb, ordered personnel to take cover but proved a hoax. US Air Force and allied troops were evacuated as two transport planes arrived in Germany with injured service members.
At the G7 summit in Lyon the communique cautioned against penalizing foreign firms trading with Cuba Iran and Iraq. French President Chirac urged diplomacy not economic retaliation and warned against hostage like measures while endorsing lower trade barriers and reforms to spur future opportunities.
Statistics from the State Highway Administration show nine fewer deaths and 8 fewer fatal accidents on 65 mph highways in the nine months after raising the limit, while 55 mph interstates rose slightly. Col. David Mitchell credits enforcement and cautions against assuming future trends. He says speeds may creep up but promises continued pressure to keep speeds under 70. Authorities consider expanding higher limits on additional highways with federal plans under review.
A farmer was killed Friday morning when a tractor rolled over him on a farm on Ray Shafer Road in Frederick County. Deputies and rescue workers were dispatched, but the sheriff’s office did not release the victim’s name at presstime as investigations continued.

The group seeks to maintain control over carnival and bingo funds amid disputes with Sister Mary Catherine Conway who may recognize only a Home School Association. The PTA reports more than $40,000 in assets from events and says it has held bingo permits.
